Cada Niño/Every Child
Review by: Dirty Linen

Tish Hinojosa has always alternated, making recordings in both Spanish and English, but her latest project, Cada Niño/Every Child, a children's CD, is the first truly bilingual album she has produced, with all of the lyrics of each song sung both in English and Spanish. While this experiment makes for occasional musically awkward phrasing in one language or the other, the overall effect is endearing, and the songs should serve as a great tool for children who are (or would like to become) bilingual in English and Spanish. The album sounds marvelous, thanks to strong material, mostly penned by Hinojosa, and contributions by Hinojosa's regular band (notably guitarist Marvin Dykhuis and percussionists Paul Pearcy and Arturo Garza), the Galindo Elementary School children's choir, and guest soloists including Hinojosa's two children on trumpet and violin. The strongest tracks include the infectious title tune, the gentle ballad "Simplementer Por Amor," the conjunto groove of "Los Fronterizas/The Frontier Women," and the closer, "Señora Santa Ana," a traditional lullaby, sung a capella.
